Egon Wellenbrink presents: Farmer’s Market | Sineu

The farmers’ market of Sineu is no ordinary weekly market. Every Wednesday a unique spectacle takes place in the centre of the village. Early in the morning, farmers, craftsmen and traders flock to the small town in the centre of the island to set up their stalls, stack boxes, prepare fruit, vegetables, bakery products, cheese, meat and sausages, spices, tools, ceramic crockery, leather goods, jewellery, fabrics, cloths and other products for sale. The farmers’ market starts at 8.00 a.m. and everything must be ready by then. One likes to do one’s business early, as from 10.00 a.m. the coaches arrive and hundreds of tourists descend on the small village!

They do not only want to admire and test, taste and buy “normal” goods. Many have come for the spectacle of buying and selling animals of all kinds: Sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, pigeons, songbirds, rabbits – everything is on offer and presented in enclosures, small, timbered sheds and cages. Around noon, the tourists, usually loaded with many bags and wares, make their way to one of the many rustic cellers and enjoy a rest with a Mallorcan meal and a good drop of the local wine. The farmer’s market of Sineu: Despite the tourists it has preserved much of its originality.
