Es Capdella, the charming village in the “other” Mallorca
Capdella is a small village in the municipality of Calvia, nestled in larger agricultural estates and overlooking the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains, especially Puig Galatzo (1,027 m). The village was first established in the 17th and 18th centuries by small farmers who earned their main income from working on large estates. Capdella has about 1,000 inhabitants, including many foreigners who have fallen for the charm of this idyllic village, but also appreciate its proximity to the coastline in the southwest as well as Palma. It is worth visiting the Carmelite church dated from the end of the 18th century "Iglesia del Carmen" with the church tower which is the focal point of the village. The gastronomic highlight of the village is the Hotel Son Claret with Michelin star cuisine and classical music evenings located in the grounds of the hotel.
The foreign residents have restored mostly small village or country houses in accordance with traditional guidelines. Thankfully, the village has been spared modern architecture and hotel buildings, so that it has been able to retain much of its original charm. This is where you can find typical Mallorcan restaurants in the village. Especially popular is the Bar Nou, which serves among other things the finest prawns at a reasonable price. Capdella is also the starting point for many hikes past olive and almond plantations (especially popular for the almond blossom) up to the Tramuntana (now declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO).
