Heinz Hoenig visits the Bodegas Vi Rei | Llucmajor

After the Romans had already cultivated wine on Mallorca – also in the region of Llucmajor – it was only revived at the beginning of the last century. The winemaker Miguel Pascal started the newly built winery Bodegas Vi Rei on the land of the finca Sa Bassa Plana. The proximity to the sea, the mineral-rich soil and the breezes of the Mediterranean give the wines of the bodega an unmistakable uniqueness in combination with the autochthonous grape varieties. The development of the wines is in the hands of the renowned oenologist Ignacio de Miguel, resulting in wines that reflect the Mallorcan landscape, wines with authenticity and character. The total area under cultivation is 85 ha, making it the largest contiguous vineyard in Mallorca. The viticulture at Bodegas Vi Rei follows strict rules – from pruning the vines, green harvesting to manual grape selection.

Native grape varieties such as Premsal Blanc, Giro Ros, Manto Negro and Callet are planted in the vineyard, but also international varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malvasia. Bodegas Vi Rei produces excellent white, rosé and red wines and it is recommended to have a tasting at the bodega. The wine tasting starts with a guided tour of the winery, explanation of the winemaking process continues with a visit to the fermentation room and barrel park and ends with a tasting of 5 wines from Bodegas Vi Rei. Tastings without a guided tour are also possible. Telephone booking is requested. Bodegas Vi Rei also offers various spaces for events (weddings, private parties, fairs, art exhibitions, etc.).
