Heinz Hoenig visits the Bodega Vins Miquel Gelabert | Manacor

Miquel Gelabert is the king of Mallorca’s winemakers. Almost no other colleague has received as many awards for his wines as he has. Before he devoted himself to winegrowing in 1985, Gelabert was a chef in a restaurant on the east coast of Mallorca. He sold his first wines in his own restaurant. And then the unusual success story began. Today, the bodega has ten vineyards with a total of almost ten hectares between Felanitx and Petra. He works with 36 different grape varieties with which he experiments. Among them are also widely unknown autochthonous varieties such as Fogoneu and Gorgollasa or the Iberian Jaumillo, but also the German Riesling grape and Gewurztraminer. However, Gelabert essentially relies on indigenous grapes. Gelabert produces about 40,000 to 45,000 litres a year with the D.O.P. Pla i Llevant designation of origin. Most of the wines are only available in small batches. Half of the production stays on Mallorca, 20% goes to mainland Spain and 30% to other European countries, especially Germany and Switzerland.

Every year, Miquel Gelabert surprises with new creations that make the wine world sit up and take notice. In the meantime, the master has received 150 national and international awards. In 2019, Gelabert presented three new wines: the Colom de Penya 2016 (a crianza red wine from 10 varieties), the Son Moix Brut Nature Escumós Rosat 2016 and the Son Moix Brut Nature Escumós Blanc 2016. The wines can be tasted in the cosy premises of the bodega, where Miquel and his wife María welcome guests. Registration is requested.
