Heinz Hoenig visits the Bodegas Es Fangar | Son Prohens

The Es Fangar estate, located between Felanitx and Manacor, is one of the largest private estates on the island with an area of 1,000 hectares and is also the remarkable life’s work of the German-Swiss entrepreneurial family Sabine and Peter Eisenmann. Es Fangar is a nature park (400 hectares), a country estate and stud farm affiliated to the Hanoverian Breeding Association, where excellent dressage horses are bred and trained, has luxurious holiday accommodation, beekeeping, extensive olive, fig and almond groves and is also a winery where authentic Mallorcan wines are grown and produced. Old documents show that wine was already being cultivated on the grounds of es Fangar in the 14th century.

The land also offers the best conditions for this: The balanced mixture of clay, sand and gravel provides minerals especially for the red wines that grow on the slopes of the main valley. The location in an almost closed valley basin avoids extreme climatic changes and protects against strong winds.

Wine growing at Es Fangar began in 2009 on an area of 36 hectares, which was later expanded by 28 hectares, and is now one of the largest wineries in Mallorca. With the new bodega built a few years ago, they have a production capacity of up to 350,000 litres a year. Currently, the harvest is about 100,000 litres per year – so there is still a lot of room for improvement. The “winemaker” of Es Fangar, Daniel Morales, received his training in the wine-growing regions of Priorat and South Africa, and is the son-in-law of wine pope Toni Gelabert. For Morales, the focus of his work is on organic cultivation. At present, nine different wines are produced. The red wine “Elements 2012” made from Callet and Cabernet-Sauvignion grapes and five other grape varieties, which was aged for 24 months in barrels and 12 months in the bottle, is particularly sought after. Es Fangar also offers guided tours and tastings, which can be arranged by phone.
