Heinz Hoenig visits the Bodegas Angel | Santa Maria del Camí
Bodegas Angel is located on the road between Santa Maria and Santa Eugenia and is right in the middle of Mallorca`s original wine growing area. The proximity to the mountains – on one side, are the Sierra Norte Mallorquina, and on the other, the ridge of Santa Eugenia – creates a unique microclimate that gives the wines of Bodegas Angel expression and identity. The bodega itself impresses with its Mallorcan architecture with stone cladding of the typical red stone of the region and has very large windows. It is cultivated and produced on 17 hectares of vineyards, all owned by Bodegas Angel. A mixture of traditional Mallorcan grape varieties Prensal Blanc (minor) and Manto Negro is cultivated together with the French varieties Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Bodegas Angel are made with respect for traditional art and the use of new oenological methods.
Of the white wines, the Blanc de Blanca (a fresh, balanced wine with a long, pleasant finish) and the Viognier (a wine with a straw-yellow colour and elegant, floral aroma) are the most convincing. The Rosado Lau Rosa (has a clear, brilliant colour with an almost herbaceous note and long finish) has also won many friends. From the red wines, of which there are no less than four wines, all award-winning, that must be mentioned: The Angel Negre (balanced body, soft and sweet tannins that give the wine complexity and structure), the Gran Selecció (a full-bodied wine with acidity, clear tannins from the new barriques and a powerful and long finish), the Cabernet Sauvignon (clean and complex density, with a smell of the aromas of red pepper, coffee and fresh smoke, an impressive finish and a hint of a note of cocoa) and the VS 12 (with aromas of ripe blackberries, currants and plums and a long impressive finish)
