Tennis in Mallorca – Visit Rafael Nadal!

For some time, tennis on Mallorca was displaced by golf. However, enthusiasm for tennis has grown significantly again since the great tennis times of Steffi Graf and Boris Becker and most recently through Mallorca’s tennis aces Carlos Moyá and Rafa Nadal. For Mallorca holidaymakers, 200 (!) hotels and apartment complexes offer in-house tennis courts. The municipalities also offer public tennis clubs and well-maintained facilities. Mallorca has 70 tennis clubs with 45,000 members and over 600 courts. This shows how popular tennis is in Mallorca. In 2016 – 2019, the newly built tennis facility in Santa Ponsa next to the Santa Ponsa I golf course with six natural grass courts and a tennis academy hosted the WTA “International women`s tennis tournament”, which had to be cancelled in 2020 due to Covid. Several internationally successful tennis players have opened tennis academies in Mallorca.

The best known and largest is the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy near Manacor. The 25,000 sqm grounds of the academy include 17 hard courts, 7 clay courts, 1 indoor court, a 25 m pool, a gym, SPA, football pitches, a school, accommodation for 150 students and a Rafa Nadal museum. The facility is soon to be significantly expanded. Under the guidance of Nadal’s uncle Toni, students from all over the world train here, and many of them have what it takes to become the tennis stars of tomorrow. However, training at the Rafa Nadal Academy has its price: a one-year stay costs about €60,000.
