International Schools on Mallorca

General enquiries

If you plan to relocate to Mallorca with children of school age, then the question is which type of school should I choose. The decision will depend primarily on the life plans of the parents: is the move to Mallorca permanent or is it for a specific period of time? Does the education provided and the final certificates meet with the requirements and conditions of international universities and colleges? Does the education received open doors to numerous options for further education and a fulfilling career? And finally: Can the cost of education be “borne”?

The Spanish education system

In Mallorca there are essentially three types of schools: the Spanish state school, the Spanish private school and international schools. The Spanish state school is free of charge (with the exception of textbooks) and available to children of all nationalities. The education level however, is often referred to as below average. Therefore, Spaniards who can afford to prefer to send their children to fee paying private schools. These schools have an above average level, although linguistically speaking the classes are mostly conducted in Catalan, not Spanish (Castellano).

International schools on Mallorca

Non Spanish parents, if they can afford it, prefer international schools that focus, linguistically speaking and referring to the courses offered, on the requirements of an international audience. Small classes, internationally trained teachers and a multicultural environment, lead, as experience has shown, to the international schools producing a significantly higher level of performance than the Spanish schools. Spanish private schools and international schools often have waiting lists and enrolment tests, so that parents should start searching at the earliest opportunity in order to find the right school for their children.
